In this special edition of #BehindtheSeams, we sat down with Sam & Austin to get to know the 9Tailors studio space. Every detail is a crucial piece of the custom-suiting puzzle—and we’ve got the 411 on the inspiration, and hard work that went into designing this menswear paradise. This carefully crafted space fosters creativity, and the cool, comfortable experience of the unique custom clothier that is 9Tailors.
“Once you step inside their studio, you’re going to love it—it’s comfortable, it’s eye-catching and it has a bar…I would highly recommend 9Tailors for your menswear (and beyond) needs, and I look forward to my next appointment!” -Derek C. (yelp.com)
Starting from Scratch
Opening the doors of 9Tailors today is like stepping into an old-school Seville road studio, with a dose of modern mastery. The vintage décor, coupled with pristine lighting and fine detailing, would never reveal the once-bare canvas that awaited Sam and Austin’s artistry.
Prior to 9Tailors, the space was occupied by a local dental office; and after cleaning out a few leftover dental instruments, Sam and Austin found themselves with the biggest, but most exciting project of their lives. The determined duo had explored a number of listings in Boston, but this charming loft space had potential that spoke volumes—so in June of 2014, they grabbed the opportunity by the lapel, and put a ring on it.
Vices and Visions
Starting with a blank slate is always a challenge; but, as Sam and Austin put it, it also gives you the chance to bring a vision to life, exactly as you dreamt it. When asked about the inspiration behind the style and vibe of the studio, Sam says there was no single motivating influence behind the project: “We were primarily driven by our desire to create a space and environment that is warm and welcoming to our clients, while showcasing our passion for menswear and custom-suiting”.
One of the biggest challenges of designing the space, was finding a way to incorporate the loft’s built-in quirks into Sam and Austin’s classic, contemporary vision for the studio. But, as is true with the custom clothier experience, no final piece is complete without character—and this is exactly what these perfect imperfections proved to be: defining characteristics that 9Tailors wouldn’t be itself without.

DIY Detailing & Client Contributions
It’s no surprise to any of us that much of the studio’s details are custom-made by, and for 9Tailors. You’ll find that several of the studio’s well-loved, eye-catching statement pieces were handcrafted by Austin himself. What you won’t know without inquiry however, is that our clients also had a hand in crafting some of our showroom pieces.
All around the studio, you’ll find personal touches that are not only unique to the brand, but also complementary to a one-of-a-kind experience. As is true with custom-suiting, the details tell the story; and 9Tailors has written a beautiful one.
Above our bar area, you’ll see bowler hat light fixtures that were conceptualized and realized by Austin, and Joe The Architect. (These are real bowler hats Austin found on Amazon and transformed into one of the studio’s coolest personality points.)
Above our sectional sofa, you’ll find a hanging spool light fixture. This gorgeous piece was a real telephone cable spool given to Sam and Austin by one of their long-time clients; Austin worked with the raw spool to create what now appears as a thread spool-inspired chandelier.
The next time you’re at 9Tailors, take a closer look around; we promise you’ll love what you see.
Each detail in the 9Tailors studio was carefully crafted, and/or selected to create a space unlike any other. From the tufted red leather executive chairs, to the traditional spool-inspired cabinet knobs, each element is crucial to telling the 9Tailors story; and now that you’ve helped us write ours, step into our custom-suiting sanctuary, and let us help you write yours!
